Natural Skin Care Products Are a Great Holiday Gift
09/21/2007
The holiday season is just around the corner and, if you’re like most of us, you’re going to have to find gifts for relatives you rarely see and hardly know. It’s tempting to just grab something off the shelf, but it’s much more rewarding to put a little thought into it and try to find something they might like. Skin care products are still the good old standby in such situations – nice soaps, lotions, bath oils, salts and gels – but as so many people now have skin conditions that may worsen if they use products laden with chemicals, it’s a good idea to choose natural skin care products that are less likely to cause a reaction.
Although it’s impossible to know what specific chemicals a person with sensitive skin will react to, there are a few likely suspects that should definitely be avoided: mineral oil, petroleum, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl and laureth sulphate, Butylated Hydroxyanisole, FD&C color pigments, formaldehyde, and fragrances. These aren’t the only potentially dangerous ingredients, but they are among the most common. All of them are toxic and may cause allergic reactions, and the mineral oil and petroleum also clog the pores.
It’s also important to look for products with the correct pH balance for the skin – between 4 and 6. Labels will often display the pH balance, or they’ll state “pH balanced’, which indicates they are in the right range. This applies to any product but is especially important with soaps and bath or shower gels. Since cleansing products are usually made with caustic substances, oils have to be added to balance things out. Natural skin care products made with coconut oil, palm oil and sesame oil are all acceptable, but coconut oil is probably the best.
Surprise someone with a shielding lotion. Anyone with dry skin, eczema or some other skin care problem will really appreciate it. Thousands of doctors are now recommending a good shielding lotion to prevent and heal skin problems. This is one gift the recipient will definitely thank you for.
Choosing gifts for people you don’t know well can be difficult, but good natural skin care treatment products that will actually make them look and feel good are always a safe bet.
