Dry Skin Care In The Most Unusual Spa You've Ever Seen
10/24/2007
Every once in a while you come across a dry skin care treatment that is truly unique. While not widely available, and not likely to replace shielding lotion as the latest groundbreaking development in dry skin care, this unique remedy is nevertheless taking parts of Asia by storm – the fish spa.
Salmon and other fish have long been recommended as dry skin care treatment because of their high concentration of essential fatty acids and other nutrients. The fish spa also helps dry skin but instead of you eating the fish, they eat you. As fish spa customers relax in a pool of warm water, thousands of little Garra Rufa fish nibble the dry skin cells off your body.
While you may never heard of Garra Rufa fish before, they have been used in Turkey for centuries to treat psoriasis and other skin diseases. Also known as doctor fish, nibble fish, kangal fish, and doctorfishen, Garra Rufa live and breed in the freshwater outdoor pools of some Turkish spas. Although they’re only expected to provide relief, rather than a cure, patients in Turkey visit their doctor fish in the spas every few months and some even claim they have been cured of their skin problems after just a few visits.
Garra Rufa are tiny – about an inch long – and toothless. They use suction to nibble away at diseased and dry skin cells. Fortunately, they leave the healthy skin alone.
Spa customers say they leave the spa with smooth, fresh skin: according to one customer, even corns and calluses disappear.
While fish spas are currently only available in Turkey, Japan, Korea and a few other parts of Asia, I’m sure some entrepreneur will soon make them available to us in North America.
However, the fish spa might not be for everyone, and it’s not very practical as daily treatment. Thousands of doctors now recommend a shielding lotion for dry skin care. A good shielding lotion bonds with the outer layer of skin to form a protective layer that locks in natural moisture and keeps out chemicals. Not as exotic as thousands of tiny fish nibbling at your toes, but it works – and that’s what counts.
