Dry Skin Doesn't Have To Follow A Nice Hot Bath

10/31/2007

Nothing feels quite as good in the cold winter months as a hot bath. Coming home to a warm soak after being chilled right to the bone really hits the spot. Unfortunately, this little luxury may come with a penalty if you have dry skin: the soap and water dries the skin further and instead of feeling good, you’re itchy. The warmth is little consolation. However, if you make your own bubble bath, you may be able to enjoy the bath and give yourself a little dry skin treatment at the same time.

Finding a commercial bubble bath product that doesn’t dry the skin is tough. The harsh chemical ingredients irritate the skin and leach its natural moisture and the added oils that are supposed to make your skin soft and smooth really do nothing more than provide a slick coating that makes the skin unable to breathe. Under that coating your skin is still dry.

Fortunately, making your own bubble bath is a quick and easy alternative.

How do you do it? Start with a base of castile soap. Castile soaps are made from biodegradable oils that are gentle on the skin and don’t clog the pores. You can use a pure liquid, or shave a bar into flakes. However, you will need to add a little scent. Rosewater, orange water, jasmine water, or a few drops of almond or lavender oil will do it.

Coconut oil is also a great addition – it smells great and is loaded with nutrients. Many cultures use coconut oil for dry skin treatment and prevention and it’s slowly but surely making its way onto the skin care shelves in health food stores. However, if you buy cold-pressed virgin coconut oil, you can use it straight and save yourself a little money. About an ounce added to your bath water should be enough. Coconut oil also produces a high lather, so you’ll get more of a true bubble bath.

To protect your skin after your bath, try a shielding lotion. Thousands of doctors now recommend a shielding lotion for dry skin care: it bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a protective layer that locks in natural moisture and keeps out the harsh chemicals and pollutants that cause irritation.

Don’t deny yourself the luxury of a hot bath in winter. The combination of homemade bubble bath and shielding lotion may be all the dry skin care you need, and you’ll feel warm to the bone.
