Good Skin Treatment Does More Than Help the Skin

04/21/2008

Most of us have skin issues of one sort or another: Our skin is dry, mottled, red, blotchy, breaks out on occasion or with regularity, is dull, rough, pale, discolored, and so on and so on. Not very many people are happy just the way they are. All this concern about our skin has given birth to thousands of skin treatment products – and some of us have tried hundreds. Is it really that important to take care of our skin? In fact, it is. But it’s not primarily because of how we look: The skin also protects the rest of the body. Good skin treatment affects our overall health.

What is the skin’s role in the overall scheme of things?

  • It regulates body temperature. Ideally, our bodies run at 98.6. Above that, and below, the internal organs and systems just don’t function well. As the blood flows through the body and comes close to the surface – the skin - the blood cools down, continues on its way to the internal organs, and cools them down as well. The sweat glands in the skin also enable us to cool down. As the sweat evaporates, so does the heat. When external temperatures are cold, the skin also helps keep the heat in the body.

  • It keeps out toxins. The outer layer of healthy skin consists of a layer of fats, oils and dead skin cells. This protective layer helps prevent germs, viruses, bacteria, parasites, chemicals, pollutants and other unhealthy substances from invading the body. If the protective layer is compromised because it is dry, cracked or blemished, the door is open to these substances and to the accompanying disease and ill health.

  • It helps eliminate waste. Ever wondered what’s in sweat? In addition to water and some electrolytes, sweat also contains waste products and carries them out of the body. In fact, the unpleasant smell of sweat is often an indication that bacteria has already colonized in the body, which is attempting to get rid of it through the sweat. Sweat glands are all over the body. Good skin treatment helps keeps the bacteria out of the body and off the skin.

So, yes, there are reasons other than cosmetic to ensure your skin treatment routine is effective.

How do you maintain, or regain, healthy skin? Organic foods free of chemical additives and preservatives, exercise and plenty of water are your best bet. Also, don’t make the mistake of adding to your skin problems with skin treatment products that contain chemicals – that’s the fastest route to a damaged protective layer. If your skin is already damaged, or you want to protect it, try a shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion bonds with the skin to form a protective layer than enables the skin to heal and prevents it from being damaged by chemicals and pollutants.

Good skin care treatment can lead to a healthier life. Take care of your skin, and it will take care of you. And don’t forget the shielding lotion!
